Wheel of Fortune is a simple, yet entertaining television program. In it, Pat Sajak and Vanna White host a wheel spinning game show where contestants earn money by guessing the letters from a ‘game board’. Each correct guess nets the money or prize that was ‘spun’. However, contestants can also spin the wheel and go ‘bankrupt’, taking all the money they won that round. I think for those of us who are looking to become more than we are, creating a wheel of fear is a logical step.

The wheel of fear is simply this: it is a list of things that we are presently uncomfortable with and that would require us to go well outside of ourselves to do. I’ll use myself as an example. Here’s a list of things I absolutely know I am uncomfortable doing as of right now.

  • Singing a solo in front of my wife or any group of people. Funny enough, I do believe I’m ok at singing as I’ve done it in the shower and in the car before.
  • Setting up a one on one meeting with our CTO here at work.
  • Attending a Steve Pavlina or Tony Robbins live event.
  • Interview a random person using a video camera, at a mall, restaurant, or other public location.
  • Create, setup, and present a life change/personal growth workshop at an event center nearby.
  • Start working out daily since it’s been over four months after my lower back surgery.
  • Ride a roller coaster.

I’m not sure what your list looks like. But this is mine. The next step is to put all of these on a wheel. This is a small spinning wheel, like in Wheel of Fortune. You want a spinner and the ability to ‘flick’ the spinner and have it go round and round until it lands on one of these items. That is the item you will then set out to do. For small discomforts, two weeks. For the bigger ones, you may have to schedule even a year in advance.

What are the things you’re afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable? Just search growth through being uncomfortable in any major search engine and you can see that this is a topic discussed amongst the personal growth community.

I say we put it to the test. I’m going to put these on a wheel and spin away. Once I have the wheel created, I’ll do another post and probably a live video where I share the results of the spin. Then I’ll update as I go and tackle this great fear. If you are as interested in growing as a human being as I am, then I hope you’ll take the opportunity to create your own wheel of fear and go after it.

What makes me uncomfortable is change. I should at some point be more aggressive in my fear and stop settling, even though things are so comfortable. It’s why I wrote my latest post.

    Change is scary!

Wow I have to say this is a really cool way to face your fears and have some fun at the same time. I’ve never heard of doing this and will have to try it. Who knows, it could lead to something extremely exciting.

I’m personally terrified of spiders but something I’m also very uncomfortable with is driving in unfamiliar areas. I panic and have to just face it and get use to driving here and there and then I become comfortable for the most part. I’m not sure why I have this fear but I’m slowly learning to deal with it.

Spiders – now those are terrifying! I agree that unfamiliar territory is terrifying and that really hampers my progress. I think the wheel of fear is a step in the right direction to overcoming this. Thanks Eric for your visit!
