A Book A Week
It’s early in the morning and I’m playing my music to get me in the state I need to for the challenges ahead. I’ve updated the side bar on the right of my website with some new information. One specific item is the “Book Of The Week” section. Here, I’ll share what I’m reading for the week. If I’m going to serve you, my knowledge needs to be greatly increased so that I have more to bring to you.
I took a speed reading course a few months ago. This will be a great time to apply the principles learned there. The principles of speed reading are actually pretty simple. They are: Read three or more words at a time, don’t sub-vocalize (don’t say the words in your head), and practice doing it constantly. I have an opportunity to read daily and with the size of some of my books, I must apply speed reading to them in order to finish them by my Sunday night deadline.
My mentor, Jim Rohn, asked the question, “Are you reading the books that are going to take you where you want to go?” To reach my goal of $832,000 in a year, I most certainly must learn to read quickly and apply what I read. A book a week is what I will start with. Bumping that up to two books a week will be a future goal. But a book a week is where I will start.
I’m not the first person to think of this concept of reading a book a week. But I think it is an inevitable occurrence when you start to think about gaining enough knowledge to be a master in your chosen field. So even if this article is redundant to many people out there who have already written on it, I’m fine with that. Because by stating it here, I am becoming accountable.
You Can Do It Too
Join me in the challenge of reading a book a week. Apply the three speed reading principles daily for 30 minutes. This will be enough to read most books in a week. Read three or more words at a time, don’t sub-vocalize, and practice daily at least 30 minutes. You may have a hard time remembering what you read at first. But you will get better.
Think of the time you first tried riding your bike. You probably wobbled and fell off. That’s ok. Because you got back on and kept trying. And eventually you started coasting and then pedaling. The concept of not being good at something when you first start is generally universal. Expect to struggle at first. But remember riding a bike. You’ll get there eventually and your speed reading a book a week – with the knowledge gained – will give you the ability to do and create more in your life. A Very simple idea but a powerful one. Reading gives us intellectual nourishment. Currently, I’m on “Art of War” by Sun Tzu and the knowledge that I’m getting is worth more than the time I spend checking my Facebook account. We have to prioritize and do activities that will nourish us. Keep it up!
Even if I’m in my 50′s, would speed reading still work for me? I’m a little bit apprehensive about this but I’m willing to try. I know I won’t lose anything and it’ll help to sharpen my mind too. Thanks!
