Imaginary Master Mind With Eric Thomas (The Hip Hop Preacher)

Eric Thomas, The Hip Hop Preacher

Eric Thomas is a motivational speaker from Detroit, Michigan. Being that I am from Kalamazoo, Michigan and feel a connection with the way he speaks, I feel I have a legitimate chance to meet him. But before that happens, I need to take the time to play out what a conversation with him might be like before hand. This is what a conversation with Eric Thomas might be like. If you are familiar with someone famous and know their works, you can reliably predict a conversation with them. The benefits of this are huge – you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to hear them speak right away or you can prepare before hand to look credible when you do meet them! Let the imaginary master mind begin.

Jeremy Johnson

Eric first off, it’s an honor to be talking with you personally. I’m serious when I say that. I’ve been watching you for a few months and you have an energy, enthusiasm, and passion about life and success that is contagious. Second of all, you are from Detroit. I’m from Kalamazoo. Right away, I know I can connect with you because we’re from similar environments in the state of Michigan. We’ve both been around the inner cities of Michigan and have seen first hand that struggles and challenges that are faced there. So I want to thank you for sharing your message and showing that you can come from the depths of frustration and rise to something great.

Eric Thomas

Thanks, that means a lot to me. First off Jeremy, I hear you about the inner cities of Michigan, and around the United States for that matter. There is a tremendous need to break the cycle of poverty and struggle that faces so many families that live there. It’s not something we can do alone and will require leadership on all levels to make happen. Now, the fact that you took the effort to come and talk to me and did it without being afraid sets you apart. I’ve looked over your websites and work and you are headed in the right direction. Now that you have me here, what would you like to get from our conversation? What can I do for you?

Jeremy Johnson

I think I would like to have a conversation with you and get your advice and counsel. You were once homeless and struggling and now are working on a Ph.D. Not only that, you are having great success with your website and YouTube channel. You are really making a difference on a large scale. This is something I am interested in. I feel I’ve only been able to scratch the surface of my potential and you are someone who I feel can help me succeed with your energy and insights.

The main thing I see as a barrier to my success is managing a full time job, a family, and the business success I am seeking. Sometimes I think I am taking on too much. What advice would you give someone in this situation?

Eric Thomas

It’s a juggling act Jeremy and it isn’t easy. To start with, I would get clear on what it is you really want. In some of my presentations I talk about first, second, third, and fourth quarter living. I know you like to play basketball so you are familiar with how the game is structured. In the first quarter, the teams are just getting a feel for each other and the game. This is the first thing I’ll tell someone who is interested in having success. What is the success you are seeking?

Jeremy Johnson

This is a good question. I think I am pretty clear right now on what I can do to be successful. I’ve narrowed it down to this: Building websites, writing my books, and doing public speaking. Those are the areas I think I can excel the most at and make money with.

Eric Thomas

It sounds like you’ve narrowed down the areas you can succeed in. What is your definition of success in each of those areas? How will you know you are being successful? Is it making six figures? Is it making an extra income on the side? What is your criteria?

Jeremy Johnson

I have to admit, I don’t have an exact criteria. I know I would like to have the opportunity to do them full time. That would put the income needed at about six figures yearly. But beyond that, I’m not sure.

Eric Thomas

Ok Jeremy, let’s look at it like this. Either you want to do what you want to for the rest of your life or you don’t. You are either content with working a full time job at a company or you will be part of something you create. I don’t think you’ll find satisfaction until you are very clear with yourself about this. Which of these best defines what you want?

Jeremy Johnson

I have a good full time job right now. It pays well, has great benefits beyond just the salary. I have to admit one of my challenges is I have a pretty good job right now. But if I look at what other people are achieving beyond what I am doing, I realize there is much more I can do. I want to be part of my own endeavors and company that I help create.

Eric Thomas

Good, now that you are clear on that, you’ve watched my video on making six figures right? You have to want to make six figures as bad as you want to… what?

Jeremy Johnson

Breathe.

Eric Thomas

That’s right. I don’t need to talk to you about your beliefs or drive or skills even. You are an accomplished person. I think your challenge right now is are you willing to go after what you want as much as you want to breathe. Correct me if I am wrong, but do you spend all of your free time working on your websites, book, and public speaking?

Jeremy Johnson

No I don’t. I enjoy playing a game on the computer, or surfing the internet. Sometimes I like to lounge around and watch the games on TV. But I heard what you said about watching the games on TV. You can catch the last part of the game in the 4th quarter. That’s the most interesting part anyway. I hear what you’re saying. I’m not giving it everything I have really. I’m still dabbling I guess is a good way to put it.

Eric Thomas

That’s good you realize that and even admit it. Most people I talk to are in that same boat. They’re putting in some effort. But they’re not really putting their whole heart and soul into it. It’s FAR from easy to do it, especially with a family and in your case a full time job. You have an opportunity if you make it work to show others with a full time job that they can make it happen. But it’s going to be damn hard Jeremy. I think that’s why you take extra time to relax on the computer or watch TV, or whatever else it may be. Because it’s going to hurt to go all the way.

Jeremy Johnson

Yeah and that’s hard for me to swallow. I know the effort I need to put in and the mastery of my daily schedule I need to have. You wake up at 5:30 am in the morning. I get up at 8:30 am in the morning. There’s a big difference between that. Sure, I stay up to 1:00 am most days working, but I’m finding that’s probably not the best way to do it. I suppose I need to get firm with my decision to give it all I have and then take the action to prove that to myself. The massive focused action to really go after it.

Eric Thomas

And it doesn’t mean you don’t relax. Believe me, you can go too hard. I got pneumonia and bronchitis recently. It knocked me out cold and I thought about some things during that ordeal that really made me think. I’m going to make sure I take time to relax, spend time with the family, and keep a reasonable balance. But I’m still going to be working hard – nobody works harder than me in my mind. You know it took me 12 years to get a 4 year degree. But I did it. Now I’m working on my Ph.D. And I’m building my motivational speaking resume. You just need to step it up and focus Jeremy. I can see that is the main thing you are missing.

Jeremy Johnson

I think most people take comfort over really going after it. Could that be why 3% (or some low percent) of the population control most of the wealth? They work harder and are more focused. But I think there is some luck involved – that is the set of circumstances we cannot reliably predict – the events that occur outside of our understanding until they happen.

Eric Thomas

Absolutely – but it works in the favor of the one who works the hardest and smartest. You won’t believe the opportunities that will come your way if you just stay the course, continue to learn, and try to connect with as many people as you can. Every time I go and speak somewhere, there’s probably someone listening that hears me that might give me another opportunity to speak. But the real reward is seeing those people whose lives are changing. That’s why I do my YouTube videos. I know I am making a difference in people’s lives, particularly the young people.

Jeremy Johnson

I second that. Seeing that I’ve had a positive impact on someone – that I’ve helped them be better is such a rush to me. By the way, the fact that you say, “Thank God It’s Monday” is such an awesome thing. I think there is such a stigma against Monday that it is somehow the beginning of a long and dreary work week. But with a simple shift in view of that, Monday can be viewed as the day the week begins and the opportunity to work and produce for the whole week starts. I look at Monday as the start of doing something great.

Eric Thomas

Right – I think you understand that it takes intense hard work – focused hard work to be successful and make six figures. What are you doing right now to increase your skills? Are you going to seminars? Are you getting around the right people?

Jeremy Johnson

As far as the online community goes, I feel I am getting in touch with the right people. But I don’t think I am around enough of the right people in person. I’ve thought about what it would be like to have a regular meeting with business owners, authors, and successful public speakers. I actually did get my first public speaking gig by being assertive and approaching someone who was doing a corporate wellness seminar at the company I work for at my day job. I just approached her and said I loved what she was doing. We started emailing and she said I should do some speaking for her. I did some and she was very happy with it.

Eric Thomas

That’s fantastic. You can see how taking initiative can pay off. And as we were talking about before, you never know exactly what will come of doing something like that. In your case, you go to do a public speaking gig.

Jeremy Johnson

I’m very happy with how that turned out. Eric, I know your time is precious and wanted to thank you for sharing a few words with me. I’ve learned from you now that I need to get serious in what I am doing – as serious as breathing. I need to have a more focused schedule. And I need to get around more people who are being successful in what I’m doing – just like you did in college when you approached the one kids name – I forget it at the moment – and he told you to read the professor’s books and comment about it in class. Those are the things I’ve learned from you Eric. I will take those to heart. Thanks so much for your time.

Eric Thomas

Jeremy, it’s my honor to help anyone who is willing to put in the effort. I can see you are doing that. Just give it a little more throttle and focus more. You’ve got the smarts. You just need to work a little smarter and get around the right people. You are well on your way to becoming the right person worthy of the kind of success that allows for leaving a day job and being self sufficient. I wish you the best of luck in that Jeremy.
